SACS Lifts Auburn's Probation

AUBURN --- The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) announced today it had lifted the one-year probation it placed on Auburn University last December.

"I am extremely pleased that SACS' Commission on Colleges has today removed Auburn University's probationary status," said AU Interim President Ed Richardson. "Clearing this university's name with regard to its accreditation status has been my top priority since assuming the interim presidency at Auburn. I have been confident all along that we would hear the news we've heard today.

"With this episode behind us, it is now time for all of us within the Auburn family --- students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni --- to work together and to renew our efforts toward making Auburn everything that it needs to be --- an outstanding learning environment for students, a leader in innovative research and an important economic engine for the state of Alabama.

"It is our understanding that SACS will ask Auburn to submit a progress report by Sept. 22, 2005," Richardson added. "We fully intend to provide SACS with every report they request." (Full statement by Interim President Ed Richardson)

SACS placed Auburn on probation last year based on allegations contained in a complaint filed in 2001 by a Joint Assessment Committee of the University Senate. The university and the Board of Trustees began immediately to address SACS' recommendations --- all aimed at matters dealing with university governance.

A SACS special committee visited Auburn in September and interviewed several AU faculty, administrators and students. It filed a report in November that contained three recommendations: that the university establish a method for presidential evaluation; that members of the Board of Trustees individually sign documents indicating their commitment to the accreditation process; and that the Board of Trustees take appropriate actions to ensure that it lives up to its own Code of Ethics and to ensure that the Board is not controlled by a minority of its members.

Upon receiving the report of the Special Committee, Auburn took steps to comply fully with all three recommendations.

Auburn's News Release

Sounds like the 2005 progress report is largely a formality, and that Auburn is out of the woods. We can only hope that some of those who led Auburn down this road have learned a lesson from it.

Foreign Correspondance

Got this e-mail from Grant to be posted on the blog.

Hey everyone, we are here. It was a very long trip which included 24 hours on the plane. Our final flight got sent to a different city because of fog in our destination and we were stuck in hotel for a day. We finally got to our city early Wed afternoon (thats Tue at midnight for you folks) with just one good night sleep of 6 hours since Sat night. It was really exhausting, but helped with the jet lag. We have gotten checked into a hotel here in our city and are currently looking for an apartment. We think we have found one. Right now the guy is asking for about $188 a month though we should get it for a good bit cheaper. School doesn't start until late Feb, so we are playing tourist right now. We have started to get a feel for where the different places are in the city and where we need to go to get stuff. It is amazing how much western stuff is here now. We have found just about everything from Herbal Essence shampoo to Spalding basketballs. I even picked up some sour starburst tonight at the shopping center. Sorry Jason, we did see mountain dew in the city 50 miles away, but none here. The weather here is fairly chilly, highs in the 40s, but its no problem if you layer up.

As for people, Dad has been really good at putting helpful people in our path. First we met a guy from Hong Kong who helped me with security when the guy really didn't want to let me in. Then we met a girl that helped us get from the province capital where we flew in to our city. She also helped us get cell phones. We met another guy who is an English teacher who is helping us with the apartments and we hope might be a bridge further into the community. Lately we made friends with and had dinner with some muslims in the city. It was really encouraging to hear the the Imam already had a copy of the Book. There are some Americans in our city who we have been in contact with. It was through them that we found the supermarket, a pizza and a steak place (niether which we have tried). It feels like its been 3 weeks instead of just one since we left. From here we plan on trying to meet some more people through English corner on Wed and Fri, plus maybe a dinner two of the americans have invited us to on Wed night (the great things about groups is that they can split up). Anyways, now you know whats been happening in the last few days. I will try to get some pictures up on the other site when I get my internet connection.

Grant

Good to know that he's doing well so far over there. Sadly, the popular "It was Grant!" excuse can no longer be used anywhere in North America.
