Blog the Plains

I thought I would create another thread for comments during the game so that it will sit at the top of the screen.

Speaking of which, how ironic that LSU missed their extra point.

True Motivation

I thought this was just too interesting to limit to a comment. Today, through work, I was granted an inside look at the videos that Nick Saban uses to "motivate" the LSU team the night before a game. They're professionally edited clips of the previous game, set to certian music or movies such as Metallica's Enter Sandman, AC/DC's Thunderstruck, or that Ali movie. But one video (I believe it was for the Georgia game) was set to a rather peculiar selection... A Nightmare On Elm Street (insert sequel). Now we're talking about clips of tackles, touchdowns, and celebrations intermingled with chopping off apendages , along with Freddy slicing off his own fingers, and repeatedly axing some guy in the chest about a million times. Other movies include that Billy the Kid movie, which included about a dozen different scenes of shooting guys in the face.

Yeah! Get pumped! Get psyched! Kill! Maim! Decapitate!

This is the motivation behind louisiana state. Who cares about graduation rate - try conviction rate.

Checking In

I am writing this post by candlelight, so please forgive the messiness. No, wait, that was my journal entry last night. Anyways, I will fill you in on my predicament.

We weathered Ivan in Enterprise. Had a few tonado warnings Wed. night, but surprisingly few. No damage to either house that my family owns or to my Granddad's office. Power stayed on all through the night until around 9:00 on Thurs. morning then went out. We still had phone lines and water. I called the automated response line that Alabama power had set-up. Its a nice little program, traced my call back so it knew where I was. But then it told me that power would be restored by 5:00 pm. . . . . on Oct. 1st. Anyways, we drove down to the Alabama power office and talked to someone my Granddad knows. He said that he thinks it will be Sunday before the power is back on, provided that he gets some help from other crews. Considering that over 850,000 people are without power, that might be a big if, hopefully not. The did get the power back on to the Hospital, even though remaining winds yesterday was making it very difficult. So, by this point you are probably wondering where I am, in Nashville. We drove up today and will be going back down on Monday, hopefully to a house with power.

AU Preview: LSU

Since the game is tentatively still on at the normal time, I thought it was time for a preview. First I'll briefly summarize ESPN's thoughts (in my own style, of course), then my own.

LSU run offense vs. Auburn run defense
LSU has 4 (yes, 4) starting-quality RBs in the backfield. Auburn has young talent at LB but will miss Dansby and Thomas in this one

Advantage: LSU

LSU pass offense vs. Auburn pass defense
Auburn's secondary looks to be one of the best in the SEC this year, and anyone who watched the Oregon State game can tell you that LSU has some problems at QB.

Advantage: Auburn

Auburn run offense vs. LSU run defense
It's LSU DE Marcus Spears vs. Williams and Brown. It comes down to the Auburn OL wearing down the front seven of LSU, which they can do with a good rotation of both RBs in the backfield.

Advantage: Auburn

Auburn pass offense vs. LSU pass defense
This is where the game will be decided. LSU will play safeties close to the line against the run, so Jason Campbell MUST take advantage of the man coverage in the secondary. LSU has a NFL-quality DE to create a strong pass rush against Campbell (remember Freeney at Syracuse? Yeah).

Advantage: LSU

Special Teams

Both teams have strong punting games and weak/terrible FG kickers. LSU has a more explosive return man in Skyler Green, as opposed to Auburn's Tre Smith. LSU's FG kicking is also supposed to be slightly less abysmal than Auburn's.

Advantage: LSU

ESPN's Prediction: LSU 23, Auburn 20

For my own personal views, this game could very well be the difference between a great season, and another mediocre season. I think we know what to expect by now. Marcus Spears at DE for LSU + Auburn WRs who are beyond incompetent = trouble. If our WRs develop the ability to CATCH THE FREAKING BALL, then we win. If they don't, we lose. I think it's just that simple. I also think it's not going to happen, but I'll be there screaming all the same.

The game should be televised on CBS nationally at 2:30 PM CST. There is no excuse to not be watching this game, people (unless you're like my parents, and have to flip between it and Red Sox - yankees on FOX at the same time). Keep the comments rolling, as Bubba and I will both be in Auburn for the game.

Hurricane Ivan

Are we sick of hurricanes yet? This one looks to be particularly fun. As of 11AM EST Monday (today), Ivan had maximum sustained winds of 160mph, making it a category 5 hurricane. The best part is the projected path as of today. I am going to post the weather.com image here so that everyone can see the current path. I wanted to find an auto-updating one, but it was too large for the blog to handle.

Buh-bye, Ivan.

As of this moment, Ivan is projected to make landfall almost on top of Fort Walton Beach, head north to Montgomery, then turn NE to go over Auburn and run towards Atlanta. From a purely Auburn-oriented perspective, it gets worse. The current projections have Ivan going over the Auburn area Thursday night/Friday morning, but it has been a surprisingly slow-moving storm. This means that Ivan may have a serious impact on the Auburn-LSU game this Saturday afternoon, possibly even forcing a postponement. So between those bloggers located along the projected path of the storm (especially Jared, Lauren, and possibly Will), and the football implications (Bubba is coming down for the game), this storm should be monitored by most of us for the next few days.
